LAKE PLACID, NY. --- The world’s best luge, bobsled and skeleton athletes will be in Lake Placid, N.Y., beginning Monday, Feb. 2, competing in the 2009 World Sliding Championships at the Olympic Sports Complex track on Mt. Van Hoevenberg. The event marks the first time ever that all eight sliding world champions will be crowned in the same month, on the same track. The event will also take place just one year before the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada.
In addition to elite level sliding, activities off the ice include the World Championship Fan Fest celebration, Saturday, Feb. 7, Sunday, Feb. 22, and Saturday, Feb. 28. The Festival, being held at the Village of Lake Placid beach on Mirror Lake, begins all three days at 3 p.m. where fans can participate in winter activities such as curling, hockey, skating and tobogganing. There will also be live music, bonfires, athlete recognition ceremonies and concluding with fireworks at 6:30 p.m.
