LAKE PLACID, N.Y. --- Thousands of athletes from around the globe will be in Lake Placid, Sunday, July 26, testing every ounce of physical strength and endurance when they compete in the 2009 Ford Ironman USA Lake Placid Triathlon. The 11th annual event brings together more than 2,000 triathletes, who push themselves to the limit through a grueling 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile long bicycle race, followed by the 26.2-mile Marathon run.
Triathlon officials are looking for “leaders” to work with the more than 3,000 volunteers, and join other Captains working for their communities, who work behind the scenes of the 140-mile long race. The leaders are needed to help in the female transition tent, gear bag check-in, run aid stations on Route 73 and River Road, as well a VIP viewing areas. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer leader, please contact the Lake Placid/Essex County Visitors Bureau’s Margaret Marchuk, director of events, at 518.523.2445 ext. 189, or through e-mail at Margaret@lakeplacid.com.
Also, local athletes interested in registering for the 2009 Ford Ironman USA Lake Placid Triathlon must do so by emailing a request to jeffedwards@ironman.com as soon as possible. Eligible participants must be a resident of Lake Placid, Keene, Keene Valley, Upper Jay, Jay, Wilmington, Black Brook, Ausable Forks, or Saranac Lake. Entry will be limited and the entry deadline is March 1. This will be the final year for a specialized local entry program. In the future, local athletes will need to register as current racers, volunteers, or through general entry.
